How can we involve more students in class discussion?

1. Ask more why and how questions.

2. Call on both volunteers and non-volunteers.

3. Circulate.

4. Encourage students to expand on their own responses.e.g. "Paul, can you explain what you mean by that?""Renee, why do you feel that way? Please elaborate."

5. Encourage students to expand on/react to statements made by other students.e.g. "Mary, do you agree with what Tom just said?" Why or why not?" "Who can add to John's statement?"

6. Provide different scenarios for students to consider.

This is one of the absolute best sites I've found online, and I say that as a teacher who has spent countless hours looking for kid-friendly material on the net. I have no idea how you found the time and energy to put it together, but you have my admiration! - Andrew Cowells, Concord Jr. High
